Most word games
let you win.
We make it count.

Six daily games with real stakes - and a growing community of curious minds who love a good challenge. Come play with us.

The whole difference, in two questions

Every other word game asks
“Can you eventually figure this out?”
We ask
“Can you solve it before you make a mistake?”

That one word - before - changes everything.

Hard, on purpose

Most daily word games are built so that almost everyone wins eventually. Guess enough times, take enough hints, chip away long enough, and the answer becomes inevitable. That’s a lovely thing - it just isn’t what we set out to make.

Here, every move matters. And that’s the fun of it: the little rush when the answer clicks and you know you actually earned it. Some days you’ll nail it. Some days you won’t - and tomorrow’s a fresh start, same as everyone else.

It was never about being hard for its own sake. It’s about that moment when it clicks - and having people to share it with.

What you’re actually using

Our games don’t reward guessing. They reward noticing - the extra few seconds where you stop, look again, and see the thing you missed.

That list isn’t decoration. It’s the whole point.

Because every move matters, you get to be fully present - reading carefully, holding options in your head, noticing the thing that doesn’t quite fit. It’s a really satisfying way to spend ten minutes, and even better when you’re comparing results with a friend afterward.

Play Matchsticks and then play Gridlock and you’ll feel the switch. Different games pull on different kinds of thinking - so there’s something here for everyone, whatever your brain likes to do.

Six games.
Six ways to think.

Kit Elliott

Meet the creator

I’m Kit Elliott. Thirty-plus years building software, and a lot longer than that obsessing over puzzles, wordplay, and game mechanics.

Before all of it, I taught sixth-grade science. That job taught me something that ended up shaping every game here: people remember what challenged them. Nobody remembers the easy stuff.

Every puzzle gets designed, tested, refined, and sometimes torn up and rebuilt - until it produces that one moment where it suddenly clicks. That moment is the whole job.

Why this matters to us

For five years, our family cared for my Aunt Alice.

She lived with dementia and later developed aphasia - the condition many people recognize today because Bruce Willis has shared his diagnosis. Aphasia steals language. It doesn’t erase a person’s humor, or their history, or who they are. It just makes it harder for thoughts to become words.

She passed away last week.

No puzzle cures dementia, and I won’t pretend otherwise. But those five years taught me something I’ll never forget.

On the days we sat down together over a puzzle, a word game, anything that asked something of her - something changed. She wasn’t being cared for. She wasn’t her diagnosis. She was thinking, searching, solving, laughing, celebrating the small victory of landing on the right word.

For those moments, she wasn’t a patient. She was herself.

That’s why The Hardest exists.

We take care of our bodies. We move them, we feed them well, we push them a little past comfortable. Our minds deserve the same. Learning, remembering, reasoning, reaching for the right word - that isn’t maintenance. That’s living.

Whether you’re nine or ninety, there is value in exercising your mind, taking on something hard, and feeling the satisfaction of working it out.

Keep your brain in the game.

Where the money goes

A share of what The Hardest earns goes to three organisations working on dementia from three different directions:

Alzheimer’s Association - the largest dementia nonprofit in the country. Funds research worldwide and runs a free helpline, staffed around the clock, for patients and the people caring for them.

Cure Alzheimer’s Fund - research, almost exclusively. Known for putting an unusually high share of every donation directly into the science rather than into programs.

Alzheimer’s Foundation of America - the one closest to what we lived. Free memory screenings, caregiver counselling, a national helpline. Help for families in it right now.

We’re small and just starting, so we’re not naming a figure we can’t yet stand behind. What we can say is that the split is real from the first dollar, and we’ll publish what we’ve given once there’s something worth publishing.

If you’ve cared for someone through this, you know how invisible that work is. That’s who this is for.

This is the beginning

Six games today. Dozens more sitting in the notebooks - new mechanics, new twists, new ways to make you stop and think.

And word games are just where we started. Anything that makes you sit down and use your head properly for ten minutes belongs here eventually.

The goal was never the biggest collection. It’s the one that actually asks something of you.

Welcome to
The Hardest

Whether you’re here for a two-minute morning ritual or a daily rematch with a friend, whether you’re nine or ninety - there’s a seat at this table for you.

If you love the kind of puzzle that makes you stop, look again, and think - the kind where solving it actually means something, and where there’s a whole community feeling that same little rush - you’re home.

See you tomorrow.
